Rending Fantasy Worlds with AI

Using my original painting as a starting point, ChatGPT generated a series of fantastical, almost Escher-like staircases. What surprised me most was how faithfully it retained my shapes, colours, and overall structure, while still transforming the image into something entirely new.

Working from my artwork, ChatGPT used a diffusion-based image model trained on large datasets to generate the stair forms. The resulting images preserved my composition and palette, while extending them in unexpected directions.

From there, I used this output as a baseline to build a larger world, introducing buildings and people with the help of ChatGPT. This left me wondering where this kind of collaboration might lead next.

Heron Painting Process

This 30 second video demonstrates my sketching and painting process using Procreate. I often see these majestic Great Blue Herons along the coastlines, ponds and tidal flats on the west coast of British Columbia, Canada.  

I start with a blue outline of the major shapes, like wings, beaks, crowns and feathers before I build out the painting in layers.  I recorded the frog and bird sounds at a local pond one spring day. I guess the frogs were exited and the birds were happy.
